Loaf is a Relative Term

Remember the "cupcakes?"

Take a look at Mr. YH's bread:

In the pan, it doesn't look so bad....

...but that top certainly indicated
disappointing results were about to follow.
When it was taken out to cool, it deflated.

I went ahead and sampled a slice (with butter because who can resist warm bread and butter?!) and it tastes good and smells good. But the loaf looks even flatter now and it's not going to work well for sandwiches. I will say this, it is definitely soft and after two days of being back in Ukraine, we already miss soft sandwich bread!

The culprit, folks, is the beet sugar- and it's wreaking havoc on my baked goods. I even found an article here that talks about the differences and impending dangers to our national desserts if pure cane sugar goes by the way side (I felt the need to be a bit dramatic).

I can't remember if I ordered a case of sugar in the States or not. I'm waiting on my dad to send me a copy of my order that I left on his computer. If not, then it's going on the order I'm making here at the commissary that is due next week and at nearly $4/bag, it'll be worth every single penny. You do what you have to do- know what I mean?

How about you? Have you had any kitchen disasters lately?

P.S. I'm not letting my new mixer off the hook either. I thought the Austrians' "Greta" would perform better than she does.

  1. Who knew sugar would be such a hot item?! Shall I sneak some in my suitcases to deliver to you in Nov/Dec? ;)

  2. I totally know what you mean about missing soft sandwich bread! At least you're attempting baking it though- I just haven't been able to find the time! We buy what they have here and if I zap it in the microwave a little bit right before I fix a sandwich it softens a little- pitiful I know!

  3. LOL! Yes, I can see how that would make a sandwich a little difficult! Bummer. My brother gave me a bread maker (I cheat) for xmas a few years back and I made bread yesterday. I didn't put the machine up yet, so I might have to make some more today. YUM!

Pretty much everything I do in the kitchen is a disaster. ;)

Maybe we should all send you a pound of sugar, then you'd be covered forever, hee hee

  5. Did you read about the ships colliding on some ocean somewhere. (Sorry, I'm terrible w/details.) Anyways I thought about you when I saw all the huge cargo boxes spilling into the ocean. Thank goodness you have your stuff already!

  6. I bet the smell of the bread baking was divine. Too bad the results were a let down. Hopefully you will get cane sugar soon.

  7. Oh my goodness! That loaf made me laugh! Thank you. :)
I haven't had any kitchen disasters lately because I haven't been cooking in it! Hard to mess up honey buns and pop tarts!
My summer job has killed my domestic skills. :)
Hope you get some real sugar soon!
    Blessings,
    Traci
